MECENCLI Week — 3D Printing in Surgery

A course week from the Forme et Croissance du Crâne lab for the M2 MECENCLI program (Mechanical Engineering for Clinicians, Université Paris Cité). Introduces 3D printing in surgery, taught by Roman Hossein Khonsari (Université Paris Cité, Necker - Enfants malades Hospital). A follow-up session is planned for late February.

Conference, 20 May 2026, PRIM3D (AP-HP)

1st National Conference on 3D Printing in Healthcare

The first edition of the national conference on 3D printing in healthcare, organized by the CHU 3D Network and hosted by the PRIM3D platform (Bâtiment Ady Steg AP-HP, 8 rue Maria Helena Vieira Da Silva, 75014 Paris). Nearly 140 professionals — clinicians, researchers, engineers, and R&D actors — gathered around the theme "From everyday care to a vision of the future": personalized medical devices, training, healthcare simulation, and the legal and medical framework. The network presented its work on harmonizing clinical and technical practices across French university hospitals, and on creating a single point of contact. Program: an opening address from the network (Dr Delphine Prieur, S. Guigo, Dr A. Lubet, A. Barakat), four short-communication sessions (3D printing in routine care, risk management and the regulatory framework for printed devices, teaching innovation and caregiver training, and modeling/simulation technologies for healthcare), workshops including a PRIM3D platform visit and demonstrations from industry partners, and a closing keynote by Prof. Sébastien Laporte, Digital Body, Augmented Body: Human Biomechanics at the Heart of Tomorrow's Medicine. The CHU 3D Network also held a working session on its structuring and its objectives for 2027.

International workshop, 26-28 March 2026

[CRANIOST] International workshop in craniofacial surgery

"Craniofacial basic and advanced techniques 2 – Unicoronal and hypertelorism workshop." Organized by CRANIOST with an international expert committee, this workshop lets experienced craniofacial surgeons train on highly realistic 3D-printed models, with one senior supervisor for every two participants. The 2026 program covers coronal craniosynostoses and hypertelorism (box-shift and bipartition corrections). Co-funded by the European Union.

Imagine Morphogenesis Workshop

An open seminar series organized with Matthew Ricci (junior professor, Institut Imagine), bringing together biologists, mathematicians, and physicians for a critical reading of major texts on biological morphogenesis. Five sessions, each dedicated to a theoretical framework (dynamical systems, information theory, agent-based models, biomechanics, learning), Mondays 5-8pm at Institut Imagine (24 Boulevard du Montparnasse, 75015 Paris): 23 February (led by Roman Hossein Khonsari), 23 March, 20 April, 18 May, and 15 June 2026.

Course week, M2 MECENCLI, 9-13 February 2026

MECENCLI Week — Segmentation and CAD in Surgery

A course week organized by the PRIM3D platform and the Forme et Croissance du Crâne lab for the M2 MECENCLI program (Mechanical Engineering for Clinicians, Université Paris Cité). Introduces segmentation and computer-aided design in surgery (PRIM3D, Ady Steg building, Hôpital Broussais, using Slicer 3D and Blender), then quantitative methods in surgery — geometric morphometrics, 2D/3D image analysis (the lab, Lavoisier building, Necker - Enfants malades Hospital, using RStudio, ImageJ, and MorphoJ). Each student carries out a personal segmentation and/or CAD project, presented at the end of the week; the best are 3D-printed.

PIR Cell Biology track, Université Paris Cité

Craniofacial evo-devo

The "Evolution and Development of the Craniofacial Region" module of the PIR research-initiation track (Cell Biology, Medicine/Dentistry route), co-organized with Ali Nassif. The course covers the foundations of evo-devo — the science of the links between evolution and development — applied to craniofacial malformations, drawing on molecular biology, comparative anatomy, and paleontology. Five sessions (evolution and development of the skull, of the middle ear, of the central nervous system, quantitative methods in evo-devo) followed by a guided visit of the paleontology gallery at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. Taught jointly by the Medicine and Dentistry faculties of Université Paris Cité (Necker and Montrouge sites), for about 65 students.

A Stranger's Hand — Gideon Rubin in conversation with Roman Hossein Khonsari

« …However the face gives priority to the self. You are you. In this sense, you could say that the face is not “seen”. It can only be embraced by your thought processes: it is uncontainable, it takes you beyond… » (Emmanuel Levinas)

From protesters in Hong Kong to spectators of the film Joker, which features an urban revolt led by a grimacing clown, the face becomes an important issue of political and social commitment, identification and recognition. States and big companies that collect computer data are interested in this facial recognition that some citizens refuse, for whom covering their face with a mask is a way of preserving their freedom. But what remains of their identity behind these hidden faces?

Projecting an identity on deleted faces is a common subject in Gideon Rubin's work as well as in Dr. Roman Hossein Khonsari's daily practice as a maxillofacial surgeon, reconstructing lost faces due to accidents or diseases.

Both are craftsmen of faceless memories, mastering exceptional manual skills, one with a brush, the other with a scalpel, and confronting themselves constantly with the question of history, memories, traces of life, identities behind these faces without features.

This conversation between the artist and the surgeon, imagined and orchestrated by Anahita Vessier, is an interdisciplinary exchange inviting the audience to dive deeper into Gideon Rubin's work on the occasion of his exhibition “A Stranger's Hand” at Galerie Karsten Greve in Paris and to discover still unexplored corners in his artistic universe through Dr. Khonsari's approach as a scientist of humanities.

Training for surgical residents, with École Estienne

Scientific illustration

A scientific illustration training program for surgical residents, born from a collaboration between AP-HP and École Estienne (Annaïck Peron and Matthieu Lambert, DSAA instructors). Across eight sessions combining traditional drawing with digital tools (graphic tablets, Procreate), each resident produces an illustration for scientific publication or teaching, working from anatomical samples (muscle, liver, brain, bone).
