The platform
Design and additive manufacturing
Based at Hôpital Broussais (AP-HP), PRIM3D brings together 3D design workstations, image- capture tools (3D cameras), and a fleet of manufacturing machines (FDM, SLA, polyjet, silicone printers), operated by engineers specialized in 3D design and manufacturing, backed by AP-HP's vast data bank (medical imaging, photographs).
The platform designs and 3D-prints organ replicas to prepare for complex surgeries, training simulators for caregivers, and custom-made spare parts to repair obsolete medical equipment. It now extends beyond the hospital, selling prototypes internationally and opening up to startups and manufacturers.
It aims to become, in time, AP-HP's in-house medical-device production center, addressing patient needs for which no industrial solution exists or is suitable — a project accompanied by regulatory approvals currently underway.
PRIM3D also coordinates the CHU 3D Network, which brings together the 3D-printing platforms of French university hospitals around two projects: harmonizing their clinical and technical practices, and creating a single point of contact to route requests between hospitals. The network held its first major national gathering in 2026 (seeEvents).
It was born in spring 2020, under Prof. Roman Khonsari's responsibility, as an emergency 3D-printing workshop set up in the Port-Royal abbey cloister (Hôpital Cochin) to quickly address shortages of medical equipment and protective gear for caregivers during the first wave of COVID-19 — a story told in the book Emergency Medical 3D Printing (seePublications).
